Belgian Solar Observer
The working group Sun is one of the sections of the belgian amateur-astronomers association VVS (= Vereniging Voor Sterrenkunde) and groups all the members who are interessted in the study of our nearby star, the sun. Since 1976, about 160 observers made more than 50.200 observations for the section.

White light flare captured by a member of the Belgian Solar Observers

Below you find a complete overview of all the photographs I made of the X-18 Flare in NOAA 10486. The first picture in the series shows the area as it was at 9h 49m UT (well before the flare errupted).

From the overview we learn that:

a) the solar flare was of a very fine structure and thus cannot have been photographed by lower resolution systems;

b) the flare errupted at about 11h 2m and ended (in white light) at about 11h 9m - 11h 10m (on the photo made at 11h 11h UTC there is nothing more than can be seen);

c) as I already mentioned before, there was definitely more activity in the 2 light bridges that connect the 2 groups of solar spots (see capture 132) when compared with the situation before the solar flare errupted;

d) the flare started as a long structure and evolved to a somewhat broader spot;

e) the quality of the images is very different altough the telescope nor the focuser were changed (most probably because of the turbulence). Only the duration of the shot was changed (electronically and from a distance). I changed the brightness levels of the images so that I obtained a more or less equal overall brightness so that the images can be compared.
